The Samyang Lens Hood for the 500mm f/8 Preset lens hood is developed to counteract undesirable light from penetrating the lens from the sides by stretching and covering over shading the end of the lens.
Whilst shooting with no lens a hood you will still generate great pictures the majority of of the time, if virtually any light happens to rebound into the lens coming in from the sides, the contrast and colour in the image is considerably decreased.
A lens hood is intended to avoid unwelcome run-a-way light from getting into the lens by boosting and covering the end of the lens, it additionally adds an element of cover protection to the lens.
